But Why Does Everyone Keep Saying he Worked With Mac?

Now I want to start this off by saying that hiring Bill O'Brien as the Offensive Coordinator for the Patriots is a huge improvement. He is a substantially better option than ANYTHING the Patriots had last year. He has proven play calling experience. Has constructed many successful offensive game plans and outside of some questionable personnel decisions in Houston (questionable being kind), he was a decent head coach. The real question is how much experience does he really have with Mac?

O’Brien was hired on to the Crimson Tide as the OC on January 21st, 2021. For those of you who are unaware of what that means allow me to explain. The College Football Playoff National Championship was played on January 11th, ten days prior to the signing of O’Brien. So how many games did Bill coach Mac? Not a single one. Yet consistently beat writer after beat writer in the media has been saying they worked together, that O’Brien coached Mac. Even as the news that the Patriots have signed O'Brien to be their OC, they are still saying it. How many games do college football teams play between January and April (Mac was drafted 15th overall on April 29th, 2021)? Last time I checked that number is zero. If you want proof look no further than this tweet by Adam Sheftler:

The only real “work” they may have done together is getting Mac ready for his Pro Day. I don’t know about you, but there isn’t any stock I will put in a Pro Day. Its totally scripted, running the best plays for that player doing things they excel at. If you think I am wrong may I point you to the throw that got Zach Wilson drafted as the 2nd overall pick in the same draft? Yeah, Pro Days mean nothing and there is no real play calling being done.

Like I said, I am happy about the signing of O’Brien. He is worlds above Patricia and Judge, plus is a bit more aggressive with down the field concepts than McDaniels. Both are things that I like mainly because, in the words of Mac Jones, “The short game sucks!” The thing is we gotta stop with this idea that O’Brien has any coaching experience with Mac. It’s a total big media fabrication. His work experience with Mac is the equivalent of passing him in the hallway.
