In the flurry of memorable moments from Week 1, there is one that stands out above the others. It is likely the most important thing that happened on an NFL football field in Week 1. It didn’t involve a missed field goal, a tie, or an unexpected upset. It did involve a football play, but wasn’t about football itself. Near the conclusion of New York’s blowout loss to Baltimore, Jets CB D.J. Reed had a phenomenal interception off Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson. He made a diving catch and maintained possession of the ball while falling backwards in front of the receiver. This gave his team possession of the ball in Baltimore territory. Immediately afterwards, he had an unconventional moment at midfield. He knelt on both knees and raised his arms to the sky. After a brief second, he then patted his chest, kissed his hand, and pointed upward. There was some confusion afterwards about why he made such an emphasis on an interception when his team was out of contention to win. A post-game interview with Otis Livingston clarified the situation and the significance of that moment. Reed explained: “My dad passed away right before this game. I was emotional, [and am] still emotional. That pick was for my dad. It wasn’t celebrating with the scoreboard. That was much deeper than football.” These are the moments where humanity shows itself through, yet far beyond the game of football. The interception was undoubtedly special for the family and friends of D.J. Reed Sr. I’m thankful that Reed was able to catch one for his dad. To D.J. Reed, from the House Call Podcast and football fans throughout the nation: You are in our thoughts and prayers as you and your family deal with this tremendous loss.
